Meet the families of Pure NZ Buckwheat…

nick & kath walters

Nick and Kath Walters - along with being parents to their two gorgeous children, Sophie 5 and Tom 3 - are 4th and 5th generation farmers in South Canterbury.

In 1946, Philip Walters (Nick’s great grandfather) purchased their current property situated in Holme Station, after owning a successful market garden in Lower Hutt. Philip recognised the unique and fertile soils of South Canterbury had potential for mixed crop farming and - that if done well - this land would provide for many generations to come.

Kath and Nick wished to uphold the sustainable farming practices which have been passed down the generations; but they also recognised with the global shift away from meat production and a move toward sustainable plant based products, it was timely to investigate opportunities for their business in this ever growing market.

Enter buckwheat, a product that met all the criteria they wished to focus on – sustainable, environmentally friendly and with many health benefits to the end user.

They are passionate about the potential that this product offers as a sustainable crop that can aid in future proofing their business; along with the numerous benefits for the consumer. Being involved in the “Pure NZ Buckwheat” family allows them to deliver a quality product, from ground to groats, grown right here in New Zealand.

Ben & Abby Rawcliffe

Situated on the fertile soils of South Canterbury lies the farming community of Otaio, where Ben and his wife Abby are 3rd generation farmers.

In the early years, Ben studied at Lincoln University, then left for Scotland to further his agricultural and rugby experience! It was here he met the other love of his life Abby – a local Scottish lass who also has a passion for sports and farming.

14 years on, Abby and Ben are now successfully running the family farm in Otaio along with their 4 children Zack 15, Tyler 11, Zara 7 and Innes 5.

With a vision to the future - Ben and Abby understand that for both their farm and the wider community to prosper, diversification is paramount for success.

Focusing on value, sustainability, versatility and environmentally friendly practices, they believe that Buckwheat in particular, has all the benefits with less impact on the environment and a sustainable future for all.

Ben and Abby are thrilled to be part of the “Pure NZ Buckwheat” family and they are excited about bringing a purely New Zealand product to New Zealanders.

duncan & amy scott

Duncan and Amy Scott from Southburn, are passionate farmers and the fifth generation to have guardianship of the family farm in South Canterbury. Along with farming, they are also the proud parents of busy boys, Tom 4 and Charlie 2.

In the late seventies, Duncan’s late father and uncle – Owen and Jimmy Scott – saw the need to diversify from their traditional farming practices. Recognising the vital role of bees in the food production cycle, they began their successful beekeeping operation.

Duncan cannot remember a time in his life that he has not worked with bees, and over the last few years he has expanded hive numbers. Amy too, was a keen beginner apiarist, until she learned the hard way that she is allergic to the little yellow and black honey producers!

When the couple were invited to join “Pure NZ Buckwheat” family, it didn’t take long for them to realize the benefits and attributes of such a versatile product. Working to their strengths, they knew that adding buckwheat honey to the Pure Buckwheat NZ brand was an obvious choice. They relish working with a like-minded group who take pride in seeing their wonderful New Zealand product make it from paddock to plate.
